Hurricane Harvey hit Texas hard on August 25th and continues to pummel Houston and many regions with wind, rain and deadly flooding. Big Y World Class Markets has pledged to collect donations from customers and employees from September 1 through September 16 to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief in response to Hurricane Harvey.

Community and employee donations along with additional support from Big Y will be donated to the Massachusetts and Connecticut American Red Cross Chapters. Both Chapters have been deploying local volunteers to help people in shelters and ravaged areas.

“The American Red Cross has already helped to feed and comfort more than 4,000 people in 36 shelters, mobilized several hundred volunteers from across the US and 150 supply-equipped vehicles, and has sent snacks, cleaning, and recovery supplies enough to assist up to 50,000,” said Chad Priest, Acting CEO of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts. “This massive response is just beginning and Red Cross workers will support those affected for as long as help is needed.”

Big Y, its customers and employees have a strong tradition of supporting those in need through the American Red Cross. Past relief campaigns include the 2004 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the earthquakes in both Japan and Haiti. Last year at about this time, Big Y drives made a positive impact on the Red Cross responses to 2016’s Louisiana Floods and Hurricane Matthew in the US and Caribbean. The 10-plus-year partnership has raised $1.1 million to support international and domestic disasters.
